Railway Paths

We are a charity that owns and manages former railway land to provide paths suitable for cycling, walking, horse riding and wheel-chair use. We also manage the properties held by our sister charity Sustrans.

The Cumbrian Railways Association was formed in 1976 in order to foster a widening interest in the railways of Cumbria. The founders were also concerned to draw together the work of those actively researching Cumbrian railway history, to encourage and co-ordinate their activities, and to provide a medium for publication of the results of their researches. At a time when the railway scene of the past was rapidly disappearing, a further objective was to record as much as possible of what remained from an earlier age.

Eden viaducts logo Northern Viaduct Trust is a small charity, established in 1989 to acquire and maintain part of Cumbria’s railway history in the Upper Eden Valley in South-East Cumbria.  We currently look after Podgill, Merrygill and Smardale Gill Viaducts, Drygill Bridge near Smardale Gill Viaduct and the Millennium Bridge in Kirkby Stephen as well as the track bed between Stenkrith and Merrygill Viaduct.

Campaign for Borders Rail We're a long-established pressure group promoting the benefits of modern train services for communities across the Borderlands. Our grassroots campaign saw the rail link from Edinburgh to the Scottish Borders reopened. Now we're lobbying to extend the popular Borders Railway onward to Hawick and Carlisle.

Grafix signmakers We are very grateful to Grafix signmakers for their loyal support with printing and design for our publicity posters, banner and the new leaflet yet to come.
