Ramblers Wall Walk Supports Bridleway Bid

Walkers from the Carlisle and North Cumbrian Ramblers Association have finished their quest to walk the length of Hadrian’s Wall. This year marks 1,900 years since the beginning of the Wall’s construction in 122AD and this year many different groups are celebrating this historic milestone. The ramblers began their 73-mile journey earlier in the summer and completed it on Tuesday with a walk from Bowness-on-Solway to the Waverley viaduct in Carlisle.

The final walk was titled ‘A Walk for Waverley’ in a show of support to the Carlisle Waverly Viaduct Trust which wants the former railway line turned into a public bridleway. The group at the Waverley viaduct included Cllr Jessica Riddle, a former mayor of Carlisle, and former MP for Carlisle Eric Martlew.

Earlier this month Carlisle City Council were urged to reopen the viaduct before the new Cumberland Council takes over next year.

The Carlisle Waverly Viaduct Trust have been campaigning for reopening of the route for over a decade.
